I remember Will Stump. He never played varsity ball, but you would always see him around town, playing on the outdoor courts. We had courts everywhere back then and there were games all the time. People in town knew who the good playground guys were and cars driving by would stop and watch the action. I’d be out walking out night and go over behind the grade school where the lights from the car dealerships shone on the court. It could be eleven o’clock in the summer and Stump would be over there shooting around, by himself. He was never shy about giving you a good one-on-one game, either. Win or lose, he was fine just to keep playing. I remember coming home nights so drenched with sweat that I would stick to the sheets.
