morning poem. January 3, 2018

In the shade of the frosted evergreens

And in the cold evening twilight

The snow on the hilltop is dull blue

In the morning pasture

The cattle tracks mottle in mud

The snow is thin and sparse

And maps the ground

White archipelagos in a black ocean

As if it had fallen from the stars

Thin and sparse in last night’s sky
