How To Write a Poem (#2)

Close your eyes and listen

Not to the birds or to the sound

of the cars swishing by on the street outside

Not to the tick of the clock

Hear what is inside

Look hard into that memory bank

Where the good and the bad swirl

The days of sunshine and sparkle

With those other days

And look at where you are now

Beyond all of that

Past everything you thought would trip you.

It takes effort, but it’s worth it

Look hard inside

Don’t be afraid to listen

And when that first line comes

You’ll know it, don’t blow it

Don’t throw it away

Let you fingers do the waking

All over them keys.
