What if those who had stood on the walls of Jerusalem when the armies of Babylon swarmed like locusts had had artillery: cannon and long-gun and rockets?

What if the prophets of Israel had spoken to the horde from the east, saying “Come within sight of this wall and you shall be destroyed: every man and every horse shall have shredded iron in his breast and no man in Israel shall fall.”

Leave us, then, in our places

And bring not your arrows and spears

But the fruit of your fields and the work of your craftsmen

For we have gold and goods to trade, even cedar from Lebannon

And water from the rock and fine purple linen

Come and learn from our prophets and share with us

All you know of the earth and the stars

And all shall be enriched and understanding shall increase
