After The Rain

This noon the river was high with last night’s rain

The new brown depth had erased the shoal

Now the flow only wrinkled over the high rocks

Leaves and bits of branches came spinning

In the currents bobbing with the dimpling

Of the rushing sluices

Gone was the noise, the seething of yesterday’s

White water

.

The sunlight bakes the surface and the riverbanks and sets free

The scent of muddy water and rainwet loam

And the river flows on silently and boldly

Like a flock of faraway geese
