Ellis skillfully fleshes out the complexity of relationships through sports metaphor. The reader need not be fluent in roundball speak to appreciate a story set against a backdrop of free throws and sneakers. His sense of place is soundly developed.
As Carl reviews and questions his choices and actions in life, the reader is called upon to contemplate the same. Although the story recalls Carl’s high school experiences, the setting quietly recedes as the real essence of the story transcends setting and invites personal introspection.
