Early Evening, Early Winter

The light is pastel

Just before twilight

Faint shade of pink in the west

And on the mountainside

The forest stripped bare

The ridges sharp and definite

Ten thousand branches reaching skyward

The moon is pale bone

And the green of the grass

And the green of the river

Are watercolors in this late

Long-angled light

As I ride on my face grows colder

And the Christmas lights here and there

Glow faintly as the shadows lengthen
