Autumn Day in Canaan Valley

All day in the open air

Morning sun above the eastern ridge

Lights the valley, wide and long

Sky everywhere

Ridges in line, one behind another

And a breeze not too cool

We hike the entire mountainside

And at the top enter under the evergreen canopy

Of the north slope

It’s dark within

And the moss and lichens

And baby spruce

Look like tiny villages beside our path

Is this Narnia, or The Shire?

Afternoon with old friends

In the stone inn built last century

The walls are heartwood

From the forest’s first cutting

Today’s news

Football scores

A map for the bike trails

And raspberry tea

By six we are tired in the best way

And look forward to deep sleep.
