afternoon poem, October 16, 2016

The old wooden bench

In front of the school

Has seen summer and winter

Spring and fall, too.

It has seen hearts be broken

And a nation united

It’s seen days of glory

And young folks excited.

It stands there in silence

Knowing its end

And knowing what once was

Will not be again.
