Evening Poem #3, October 2, 2016

The shop on the plaza in Taos

Opened early in the morning

Even in August the air

From the mountains around

Was chill and filled with scents

Of evergreen and desert flowers

One seemed lighter walking there

The store floor swept every day

Everything neat in and in order

Leather goods, handmade

Painted pottery

Copper and turquoise

Paintings of Taos Mountain in snow

And Indians dancing

Navajo rugs

And beautiful young women

Who waited behind the counters.
