evening poem #2, October 2, 2016

I remember sunny days long ago

By the bright water, all of us

The afternoon starting to cool into evening

Shade under the old oaks and elms

Blankets on the ground

Listening to the radio

Love songs, all of them

Rhythm and blues and harmony

When I’m with you . . .

We knew then

That our time would never run out

That our strength and beauty

Would never fade

Like that of all generations before

It doesn’t matter where we are

We knew that all the songs

Were about our lives

Or about how our lives would surely be

None of us would ever be lonely

None of us could ever lose

I’m with you, that’s all that matters
