Evening Poem, September 25, 2016

The lawns are dark and quiet

And the streetlamps make yellow glow

In the night mist

Like van Goth’s stars.

There is no wind and

No sound of highway or railroad

Out of the shadow

The deer steps alone

He stands as if at attention

At the empty street

Then bends and grazes

On the kempt lawn

All in his own speed and rhythm

This is the world

That no one sees

These moments where

Civilization and settlement

Give way to sleep

And the wild world wakes

And tiptoes quietly

In the night.
