night poem, august 31, 2016

If it rains tonight

I want to sleep out on the porch

And hear the raindrops fall hard

On the dark limbs and warm lawns

Lifting out the last aroma of summer.

That rhythmic dripping is like a lullaby

Or the chant of some hypnotist.

In the cool, I’ll cover up

And be gone in five minutes

And not wake till dawn.
