First Night of May

The first night in May has in it something yet of winter
It lingers high above the lawns, like a bell sound
A hint of chill in the clear air, just enough to make you close the window

But the day’s Sun has already opened the pores of the Earth
And the new warmth, the promise of summer
Is ten thousand quiet sounds together along the ground
The violin whisper of each blade of grass, each shoot of vine growing
The choral noise of insects, newly born

Open the window
