It had been a long drive and he had done it with only a few breaks: one for gasoline and another at a rest stop but he had driven now for three hours straight without budging from underneath the wheel, just him and that DJ out of Richmond who was playing all the right songs, he had it cranked until he was close enough to the coast to get a scent of the ocean and then he put all the windows down and turned the radio off and when he got to the parking area on the beach road he stopped the car and took off his shoes and ran over the shoulder of sand and onto the beach and down to where the last push of the waves kept the sand wet and hard and he looked out as far as he could look into the new dawn, into the golden horizon and watched sea birds flying out toward the rising sun.
