Morning Poem, April 10, 2016

.

The wave has passed and left peace
And now, having hit a wall, rebounds
And washes back our way
Diminished now
But carrying with it
The sound and smell of things past.

Those sounds I thought were laughter were screams
Those pictures then were nightmares, not dreams

I look as it passes over me
And see things I remember
But they are not as I remember them

Those sounds I thought were laughter were screams
Those pictures then were nightmares, not dreams

We were in greater trouble then
And more ignorant than we knew

That wave at first could have broken us
We might have drowned in it.

Some did.
