What Poetry Does

There are reasons for it

All this form and meter

Those long ago understood that

Even if in an inchoate way.

Poetry changes your brain

It moves things around

Lights up, forces connections

Here and there

Parts that never met before

Meet now in consideration

Of some new association of words and ideas

Now a new neural pathway is born.

One true reading of one true sonnet

And you will never be the same person again.

  1. A // W // F says:

I never thought about poetry this way before — as an exercise in hacking new pathways through the neural underbrush — but it makes sense, and it also strikes me as quite profound.

Thank you for sharing: you gave me something new and beautiful to ponder today.
