How to Write A Poem

Open your hands

And lift them high into the air

Breathe in, breathe out.

Listen

What flashes across consciousness?

Grab it now, before it fades

Write it down, don’t be afraid.

A fragment here, a picture there

The words you wished you’d heard

Put them together, let it flow like a river.

Let it run over every old wall

Built of scab-bricks

And past every jealous and cowardly demon within.

You can sing to the whole world

In one instant now.

A billion at a time.

What if one percent,

Just one percent

Fall in love with you?
