Morning Poem, January 16, 2016

In 1964 the Patrol Trip from Hansford Elementary School
Took buses to Washington D.C.
No one was worried about terrorism then
Victoria Lowndes was the girl’s captain
Had the best grades, best classroom decorum, best posture
She had a song for us to sing on the bus
She’d changed the words to some popular folk tune
To tell the story of our going
But there were other songs on the radio I’d brought along
Telling of other journeys
And those were the songs I heard
