An earthly story with a Heavenly meaning. Some describe a parable this way, and that description would apply to Overtime, by Larry Ellis. But this story of a fallen man, and of fallen man, is not completely described that easily.
It has some aspects of the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life,” but the characters are deeper, and sometimes darker. Since it involves sports and the supernatural, comparison to the sports movie “Field of Dreams” is tempting, but there is more explanation and less sentimentality. The truth is, I know of no movie, or story that can be compared to Overtime. The descriptions of places, and characters, and thoughts are meticulously and beautifully written, revealing a keen eye for the world around us, and an exceptional understanding of the human heart.Perhaps the greatest endorsement of any work is this. You will find yourself, or someone you know, in these characters, and remember their tragedy and triumph long after finishing this story.
