How To Write Poetry
Poe said that he wrote his poems
The way a man builds a bridge
“This is the effect I want,” he said.
“And so these are the words I need.”
He did it hammer and tong, he said.
Taking labored hours.
He says this of the very poems
That rush like waterfalls
And haunt like demons.
I don’t believe him.
When Jagger wrote “Brown Sugar”
He was smiling as he stood
The pen could not move fast enough
He flipped the pages in the legal pad
And in twenty minutes, there it was.
He just let it in
It would not have been there the next day.
I believe him.
